SIDE RETURN EXTENSIONS
Side return extension are one of the best ways of improving either a terraced or a semi detached house.
A side return extension is typically carried out in the kitchen area. The side return - the pathway that runs alongside the ground floor of your home. Make the perfect space on which to build the extension, hence the name side return extension.
There will be a few main changes the will be needed to install this type of extension.
Thats why its important to get the design right.
You’ll need to;
* Build a new wall on the boundary between your land and your neighbours on the kitchen side. ( you will need neighbours permission) or the wall might have to be installed sole on your side.
* Add a new roof to the extension area most people go with fully glazed roof or skylights in order to take full advantage of bringing more light into there home.
* Knock through the sidewall of current rear room or rooms sometimes only a partial knock through is necessary will depend on the individual project.
* Install new floor to cover extended are, but most people have a new floor for the entire area.
IS PLANNING PERMISSION FOR A SIDE RETURN EXTENSION NEEDED
Council rules for this kind of project actually changed back in 2008, so as of 2017 you usually won’t require planning permission. This applies as long as the extension is only on the ground floor and doesn’t go any higher than four meters.
(Always best to check with your local council Newton Abbot, Torquay, Paignton, Exeter)
Even thoughts a fairly unlikely your need planning permission, there will be building regulations you’ll need to comply with.
We are starting a new project in March for a fully glazed side extension in Exeter so watch this space for pictures and up to date blogs about this new and exciting project.
